Traxxis, that is not the purpose of that hose. What you are talking about is the vent that returns fumes to the intake to minimize pollution. It is part of the PCV (positive crankcase Venitlation) system. Its in the Haynes manual if you want to look it up.
hmm... ill hafta look that up in my book, however seems like when i looked at it it wasnt really connected to the header, but rather attached to it (to gather heat i assumed, but u know what they say about assuming stuff, hehe).
Hey, whatdya know.... my appology, i suppose i was looking for the Air Muffler.... so then is there an air muffler on the early '90's Rangers? Guess ill run out on break time and check it out. Ill get back to you....
okay guys, just took out the air box and have decided that there is niether an air baffle, nor an air muffler on the '91 2.3 Ranger. Unless you can show me differently........
my 92 ranger 2.3 does (its basically the same as a 91). its just a hard plastic pipe in between two rubber elbows. unless yours has already been changed.

I took my airbox out today and replaced it with a KKM True-Rev Sport Kit. It's basically just a S&B power stack filter with a machined MAF adapter. My airbox didn't seem to have a baffle on it. That new airfilter makes my 2.3L sound a lot meaner and I can tell a bit of a power increase.
Yeah, I'll get some pics posted. That insulated intake tube doesn't look the best though. I might redo it and just insulate the part of the tube that's facing the engine so that it'll shield it from the heat. I'll get some pics posted in a few minutes.
Yeah thats a good question. ON my friends cherokee, he didnt strap it in, he just let it ride where the air box was. After 2 hours there was already a huge gash in the tube where it had been bouncing around.
BTW, theinsulation doesnt look bad. I wouldnt change it. Also have you thought of making a heat shield around the filter? You can probably get aluminum flashing,a dr bend a rivet it together. Just a thought.
