No GEM on your '87, they didn't come along until about '95 or so.

On my 1989 they are powered from the power distribution box, fuse 8 & 1, but I don't think you have a PDB so then it would be fusable links.

Anyone have an 87 wiring diagram?

Yep, i've got one. Ignition switch to EEC relay is red/light green. Starter relay -red fuse link- to EEC relay is yellow.

For the pump relay: Starter relay -blue fuse link-to pump relay is also yellow.
EEC relay to fuel pump relay is red,
And yes the relays should click when you turn the key on.

The power to energize the relays, comes from the ignition switch.

So if they are not working, 87XLT will have to give you the color codes for those wires, so you can check for voltage coming from the ignition switch, to the relays operating coils.

Ground the fuel pump test pin on the eec test plug and turn on the ignition switch the pump should run. If it does then check to make sure you have voltage at the PCM. The pcm does nothing but turns on ground for the FPR circuit I think it is a yellow with green stripe wire I don't have my books here to give you the pin outs on the pcm. If there is no voltage there then it is a wiring issue if there is voltage it is a pcm issue. I have a mustang I have wired that circuit up to a switch because the PCM FPR circuit is bad.

ok well a couple days ago i was checking some things out and trying to clean up all the ground wires i could find. but heres the problem now well acouple days ago i left my switch on for like 10 minutes or so and i was looking around and found out that my alternator was hott. is it supposed to get hot like that with just the switch left on? well today i went out and tried to check that out like wtroger said but now i am not getting any power in the cab at all. the battery is good i put it on the charger and its fully charged, i also checked to see if anything was going in with the charger on and still nothing. so then i checked and im getting power too the relays and the one does click when i put the battery terminal on. so ummm...... now what? lol
P.S. does anyone have a distributor drive gear? (the gear on the end of the shaft?)

To check the fuse links turn the ignition switch to run. Are the idiot lights on.

Try the headlights, do they work?

disconnect the big plug on the alternator i think you have a short some where in the electrical system and the only way the alternator can get hot is if a diode has gone short.

Yup, sounds like you might have a shorted diode in the alternator.

Why not pull this puppy & have a no cost bench test done, at your favorite autoparts store.

Let us know what you find!!!!

So thats what the problem is, a shorted diode. Good info to know.

Note to self on page 16 of my EVTM: Hot alt equals shorted diode.
