Question mig welding shock hazard?

Gentlemen, Ladies....

Will begin practicing some butt-welding this weekend with wire feed.

What I'll be practicing on is a fender which will be grounded with the clamp from the mig. Naturally, I'll be using thick gloves - is there a shock hazard if I'm holding the metal that I'm butt-welding with my left hand or do I have to use a bracket of some sort whilst welding it to the fender?

Thanks for reading this stewpid question - hey; I've got plenty more - I'll try to space them out....

If you strike the arc to the metal in your hand before it touches the metal with the clamp, potentially you could get a shock. It depends on how well you’re grounded and how well the gloves are insulated. For that reason I prefer to not hold anything I am welding, clamp it and be safe.

Welding is a little scary and intimidating to begin with since the arc is a ‘controlled’ short in the electrical current. Your training curve will be shortened if you have an experienced person work with you on your technique, but you’ll get the hang of it in a little while.

so, if i understand correctly, say, left to right:

hand holding fender
clamp
spot where the arc is aimed

the arc will short to the clamp before it reaches the "hand holding fender".

right?

I've been welding since the 1960's. I have been shocked multiple times while stick welding but...

I don't recall ever being shocked while mig welding.

Thanks - guys, sounds like "clamp it and be safe". I don't want to go walking around like Phyliss Diller after I get zapped once or twice (hair standing on end...)
