Edit: Now its the right one. Sorry.
Hey Ratsmoker,

Besides the cam info, what else did you plug into dyno2003? (intake, headers, carb, etc.?)

Thanks!

Edelbrock VS Crane

Actually, the two cams are not comparable that easily. The Edelbrock cams are decent, computer ground designs. But they use very slow ramp speeds. (They are ground by a company that sells the same grinds to Federal Mogul, Clevite, Mellings, etc) The Crane is a much more modern design with faster ramp speeds. Using only .050 and advertised numbers is just not very good. But, without a Cam Doctor to measure them yourself, what can you do? I like both the 901 and 941, and they are pretty well covered here. (BTW-the 901 can be had for a special low price-drop me a line and I can tell you how.)

All I would add to the advice already given by the guys above is to consider some quality port work. A good porter can give you 30-40ft/lbs more with a nice pocket port. Only problem is, "Pocket Port" is subjective. What one shop calls a pocket port, we call a bowl blend (worth 8-15hp), and an inexperienced porter can actually reverse the power. So it is wise to shop around. Second, as was already mentioned, for great torque go the 3.98" stroke 410 route.

Dyno 2003 measures ramp speed and figures it into the equation. You are right. The Edel cam is much slower getting the valves moving.

Annihilator, I have the new Pro-Sim dyno program. It appears to be very in depth and allows air flow input. I have not used it a lot yet gotta mke a livin', but hope to experiment some soon.

Hey there,

I'm running the 901, performer, D2's, DUI and 600 carter on a 9.5:1 390 and it is a very easy 425 ft/lbs. I would estimate more like 475+ ft/lbs right around 2000-2800 rpm. I have not had this engine dyno'd nor would I ever have an engine like this dynoed, but after driving my friends identically equipped chevy truck with a dynoed 430 horse/ 475 ft/lb 454 I'd say the 390's got the 454 matched or beaten on torque below 2500. I had my heads bowl hogged, but stuck with stock size valves. It sure feels like alot more than 402 cubic inches when I'm driving it.

Okay, so how and where do I drop you a line for the special low price on the 901?

Thanks for all of the info. I am always pleased to find the people here knowledgeable and helpful. I have all of the info. I need. I bought most of the parts except the crank and rods. As soon as I get those ...off to the machine shop it goes. My good old work truck will be happy. To all of those who helped me when I was working on other projects thanks also. I am pretty much done working on trucks for awhile, well maybe. My next project will start next year.I will get into the Early Broncos. Until then or until something pops up with my good old reliable Ford truck thanks.
