I am going to try get some aluminum or steel rod stock and drill the hole to .090 but if I can't get the rod stock what do u guys recommend? I have heard of using holley jets. The engine is in my pickup so I can't be doing any drilling and tapping in the oil passage in the heads. What number of jets? Do I need to drill them out? I have also heard of using the ends of 302 Ford pushrods.
I recall seeing .080-.090 on the Holley jets. Do a search around here, been covered quite a bit and the concensus is that a .090 jet is not drilled out to .090....
Ok, If I do the mod. with the Holley jets, they will just slip fit into the passage...right? Like I said earlier I can't be drilling and tapping. One other thing, I will have to see but I would think if a guy did this with carb jets that it would be a somewhat turbulent transition for the oil. I've read that when using rod stock drilled to about .090 to chamfer and smooth the end that points down into the passage to reduce turbulence. Is this anything to worry about? Where could I possibly find some rod stock, steel and recycling center maybe or maybe like ACE Hardware?
Thanks Guys!
Just go to the auto parts store and order a set of #90 Holley jets. They will know how to do that but will not know why you are using them for what we are going to tell you to use them for. You have to take the rocker assemblies off carefully by loosening each one evenly and slowly. Keep the bolts for there respective holes as there are 2 very important ones(one on each head) that are longer and get skinny after the threads to allow the oil to pass by. Ok, here we go, this will not take too long, The bolt hole with the longer bolt in it will have a hole that you can see down in it that goes sideways. This is the hole that the oil comes up through. Push the Holley jet thread first into this hole. You dont actually use the threads, this jet fits tight in the hole on the wider part of the jet. Push it in flush and you are done. There is a sharp turn about 1/2" down that hole so the jet cannot go anyfurther or fall out. Put the rockers back on and make sure the long bolt is in the hole with the jet. Adjust the valves after reinstalling the rockers(dont know if you have adjustables or not) and repeat on the other side. Congratulations, you have just restricted your oil enough to keep some down with your main bearings. Good Luck!!!
Thanks guys,
I will do that today, then I will have fun putting my M/T aluminum valve covers on (drivers side is easy but the passenger side is a pain in the @$$ because I have A/C and that big box makes putting the one cover on a science with getting the back rockerarm just right and then using a pry bar between the cover and A/C box). Thanks again
do the edelbrock heads have the same oil passoge? and if so are they already restricted? i know they were modeled after the 428cj heads? was just curious.
I use oil gallery plugs, cost about 2 bucks for a hundred. Drill a 1/16th inch hole in it and tap it in the head oil gallery. Later if you change your mind run in a screw and yank it out. Easy and cheap! E-bock heads are already restricted.
