Recommended diff oils for 97 f250

Going to change the diff oils in my truck, thinking about going synthetic, what would you guys reccommend. I live in Alberta so I figure synthetic would be beneficial. Accordining to the maintenace guide, superduties did not come from the factory with synthetic. I have a 97 F250psd 4x4. Not sure exactly how I will get all the oil out the front though, pumping it out is not very thorough.

The book calls for 80W-90, but I suspect you could go with a 75W-90 since you are so far North. Just about any brand of synthetic should fit the need. I like Mobil 1.

Other than pumping it out, the only way to drain the front D50 is to disassemble it. I'm going for the pump-out method when I change mine this Spring. It may not get everything out, but it sure beats the alternative.

If you are brave (and careful), you can drill and tap a hole in the bottom of the front diff. Don't drill too deep or you'll hit the ring gear! I've seen instructions somewhere on the Internet- try a search on GOOGLE.

Some need friction additives. A couple that don't are: Amsoil and Royal Purple.

I just replaced mine with Royal Purple, but my 2002 calls for 75w-140 weight gear oil. Check your owner's manual to make sure; pay attention to any weather factors that affect what weight you should use given your locale.

Lucas IS good stuff. I run their oil in my '59's motor. Should've thought of them too when considering rear gear oils, but oh well... RP comes highly regarded, so no regrets.

Just double check and make sure if Lucas does or does not need the friction additive for your limited slip rear diff.

You only need the friction modifier if you have a limited slip differential. If you do need it, your local Ford parts dept is the only place that sells it. Not too expensive the last time I bought some.
