I am going to change front and rear diff oil in my 2002 F250 4wd, is there any trick to it? I am in Australia & have purchased Castrol SAF-XA 80W - 140. It says on the bottle fully synthetic limited slip rear axle oil, and upgraded formula - no additional additives required.
Can this be used in the front and rear diff, how much do they take, and is silastic OK when I replace the diff covers?
Thank you guys for all your help, this is a great site!
No real trick to changing the oil, however, I have seen on plenty of occassions where the friction modifier that is added by the manufacturer is just not enough, and the clutches are left chattering some. You may get away with it, but won't know until you drive it after the change.
I do not use gaskets on my diferential covers, I only use RTV silicone on them. The key to sucess is allowing it to dry before installing the cover back on. Usually about 15 to 20 minutes is a decent drying time, then never tighten the bolts down too far, and keep the torque even, and do not overtighten any bolts as this will warp the cover and cause a leak.
You are about to tackle a pretty easy job, I only think the roughest part is going to be obtaining extra friction modifier there in Australia. I have heard of guys in other countries using modifier for other manufacturers that was easier to get with good results.
I have never seen an all in one fluid for limite slip. No matter what they say I have always had to buy the tube of modifier. As far as the reinstall. I always clean both surfaces really good with brake clean since it leaves no residue behind. Then apply a thin bead of black silicone RTV to the cover. Let it skin over, then put it on. Spin all the bolts down with your fingers until you can't anymore, then alternate around the cover so that you don't get one side tight all the way down before the other. It is a really easy job, while you have the cover off, inspect the gear sets for wear/damage. Also, the old fluid can give you a hint about what has been going on in there.
