360 to 460
right now i have a 1976 F-150 4x4 Ranger with a 360. as of now its only running on 6 cylinders due to lack of compression. ive been thinking instead of fixing the 360 just replacing it with a 460. what are some pros and cons of a 360 vs a 460? i want better gas mileage and more hp. i also would like to know what the best gears would be for highway use with a 460. if you need any more info on the truck let me know.
thanks for your respnses

Having owned a 76 highboy 4x4 with a 360 in it, eons ago. The mileage is no worse on the 460 for sure. The power of a stock 460 is handsdown better than a stock 360.
3.54 gears would be decent for road driving and power.
It would involve quite a bit of work. You would have to change your transmission to except the 460 bellhousing bolt pattern. Come up with a rear sump oil pan, accessories and brackets.
Do you have an auto or manual trans?
If you want to save money go back with what you have. Or you can always drop a 390 in it. They are probably getting hard to come by now though. But its a straight up swap. I put one in the 76, I mentioned above. I ran a Holley 500CFM 2bbl on it, headers, It ran a lot better than the 360, same mileage.
if any things gonna happen it wont be till summer so i have some time to look around. ya i thought i had heard that i would have to change bellhousing but i couldnt remember or not, now i know. my truck is an automatic. ive also heard that 360's can be bored out to 390's..is that true? if it is ill just go that route cause from the way you described it itll be much easier and cheaper.
would 3.54 gears be good for the 390 also? im always driving back and forth from ft worth to dallas so it would be nice for it to be better sutible for the highway.
thanks alot for your input
