Ok I have a line on a good running 460 for 500. I have the 360 torn down and ready for a light rebuild. bearings/cam and lifters/ and rings. what do ya'll think do i blow off the 360 and pick up the 460 or just stay with the 360? Is the 460 really worth having? gas mileage about the same. I know more horse power/tourque but. Anything out of the ordinary for the 460 swap? Is it a pain in the butt or what? Thanks for your input.
Many stock 460 are extremely restricted and quite honestly perform like crap. Buying engine parts to so a mild 460 rebuild are probably cheaper than the FE series and could make up the $500 you spent purchasing it.
Stock heads are likely to really suck for any sort of worthwhile build (unless you get an extensive port and polish but at that point you may as well buy aftermarket heads). Unless you are happy with almost stock performance you should be looking at aftermarket aluminum heads, exhaust headers, aftermarket intake and aftermarket cam (like Comp Cams Extreme Energy with around 220 intake duration would be nice for a truck). If the engine can't breath it can't make power. All these items should be much cheaper for a 460. Plus you already have the extra cubic inches.
Another thing, the 460 isn't going to be a "bolt in" swap. Different mounts, different towers, accessory brackets, bell housing or trans. etc.
You need to figure that into the equation too.
One more thing I would think about is whether or not you care about your truck being original. I like to keep things original, so that is one reason I would keep the 360 (assuming its the original 360).
that would be nice but i think i have become a convert for a 391 hd with ported and polished heads and aluminum edelbrock performer 390 intake so much potential and a long life too lol ........... actually our derrick hand on the drilling rig i work on he got a 54 short and narrow 4x4 with what we were told to be a 428 and it was none other than the coveted 427 it made him feel a lot better for the $10,000 purchase price happy hunting

this is what i was worried about. Didnt know what changes had to be made in order for the 460 to fit.
Thanks for the input and honest opinions. I think I am going to go with the mild build on the 360. Always one for horsepower at the least amount of cost. Any sugestions on what intake for the 360? I havent even looked yet but I am not using the stock one.
I made a 390 out of my 360 when I rebuilt it. I used an Edelbrock #2105 Performer manifold. I used this manifold so I could also use the exhaust crossover. If you're going to run headers then the Edelbrock 7105 is the same manifold without the exhaust crossover.
I'm also using (initially) a Holley 780 cfm carb. but thats borderline for a 390. It might be too big (it's new and the price was right, free). You'd be better off (esecially w/ a 360) with something in the 600-650cfm range.

Thanks mike, I will see what i can do. engine looks great. Cant beat free parts especially when they are free.

I think it depends on what year the 460 is, if you could get the numbers off the heads or the block. 460's built before emissions really have some power in stock form. look for C8VE or C9VE or D0VE
