So today I ventured to my ARB installer. I asked about sliding an airlocker into my Dana 44 IFS. Guy says the first time out I might, but promises the 2nd time out, I will break no less than one front axle. Says even a limited slip diff is likely to bust an axle if I got on it too hard. Anybody busted an IFS using a limited slip? I want all my tires all the time when I'm in the sand.
i had a locker in the front of my ttb dana 44 and never had any issues with it. i cant remember wich locker it was though, its been awhile. i know i wheeled it very hard though. i did break hubs a couple of times but no axles!
The ussual weak link in the Dana 44 TTB setup is the U-Joints. I currently have L/S in mine and have wheeled in 2-4ft of snow with no problems. I, also, have an Atlas II transfer case(3.8 Ratio) and a Klune-V underdrive unit(2.7 ratio) installed on my 1990 Bronco. I was up in the snow durring the Winter Fun Fest a couple of weeks ago and had no problems with breaking anything.
I am planning on putting an ARB up front on my rig soon. Along with either an ARB or a detroit locker in the rear.
If you are concerned about breaking axles or u-joints up front while using some kind of locker up front, you might consider upgrading the u-joints to CTM's and the axles to Warn axles or CTM could make some up too.
I have the ARB in my front IFS d44. I have busted my front left u-joint already. That was my fault thought. I was trying to back up and parallel park on a snowbank and the *** end of the truck slid. That made my wheels turn and I was in 4L. The tire was on pavement, and the rest were in snow, it was a crummy old U-joint too. I have wheeled it a few times, nothing too stressful yet but so far that was my only damage point. I have spare axle shafts now. I can change the shaft w/ common hand tools in about 45 minutes.
As long as you don't punch the throttle with the wheels turned it'll be fine w/ a locker. You never know what the limits are until you pass them

Anyone that tells you a limited slip is going to break your front dana 44 has no bussiness installing lockers. Atleast I wouldn't wan them near my truck.. any limited slip is going to give up LLOOOOONNNNGGGG before your axle will. You will be fine with a locker, just drive smart.
As for warn axles, I've never heard of them for the dana 44TTB. If people pressure them enough they might build them.
When I went to the drivetrainsuperstores site and clicked on the appropriate year and model (1990 in my case) selected Dana 44 to pull up all the R&P, bearings etc. for the D44 TTB, there was Warn axles listed in the Axle section towards the bottom. However, upon clicking on those parts, parts for D44 for Early and 78/79 Broncos popped up. . .similar for other sites . . .
4WOR did a section in their magazine not too long that did a TTB beefing up! i would suggest that or go with a monobeam (D60). If that's not possible just keep your foot off the skinny pedal all the time! you should be fine if you know what you are doing!
