351W Troubles........................

1983 Bronco
351W
I have replaced the coil, wires, distributer cap and rotor, and the spark plugs. Removed varible venturi carb and put on a older 2 barrel carb from a 91' f-350 with a 351W. All I'm getting it 12 gauge gun shot gun blasts from the engine once every 30 15 seconds. What should I try and do? Is my timing off? It could be....... But would that prevent the engine from running NOT at all?? I was told there was a pick up coil and after taking the bottom on the distributer apart I found NO "pick-up" coil. I have NO vacum advance on the distbuter, When I bought the bronc a few hoses are plugeed here and there with screws, nothing out of the ordinary for an old vehical. What vital things am i missing? Getting good spurts of fuel from the pump when turrning the engine over. Step by step process? Thanks guys!

if its spitting and poping then i would start by making sure the distributor is instaled correctly and make sure you dont have a couple of plug wires crossed.hope this helps DW

If it doesnt have electronic ignition than it has to to have vacumn advance. I would start with that then check timing..

fIRST OFF YOU NEED TO PULL THE NO. 1 SPARK PLUG OUT AND TURN THE CRANKSHAF EITHER MANUALLY OR BY BUMPING THE STARTER UNTIL YOU ARE AT TOP DEAD CENTER OF THE COMPRESSION STROKE. pUT YOUR FINGER IN THE SPARK PLUG HOLE AND WHEN YOU FEEL A BURST OF AIR OUT OF THE HOLE THEN THIS IS WHERE YOU WANT TO BE. CHECK THE POSITION OF YOUR ROTOR. iF IT IS NOT POINTING TO THE NUMBER ONE SPARK PLUG WIRE ON THE CAP, THEN YOUR TIME IS OFF.

YOU COULD ALSO HAVE A BAD CARB. IF THE CARB ISN'T SET CORRECLY IT WILL SPUTTER ALSO.

AS FAR AS DISTRIBUTORS... IS THERE AN IGNTION MOBULE ATTACHED TO THE SIDE OF THE DISTRIBUTOR? YOU COULD ALSO HAVE AN AFTERMARKET DISTRIBUTOR THAT COMES WITH A MECHANICAL ADVANCE. IS IT A FORD DISTRIBUTOR?

I HOPE THIS HELPS.

Any progress on the 83? I found that autozone.com link here at this site using the search. Might take a while, but look for posts on distributors and timing. The vacuum advance adjusts your timing at certain speeds/rpms. I didn't see one in your pics at the other site?

I subscribed/marked this thread so I can keep track of it.
