I am not 100% on the year they started or ended if they even did stop making the ZF but I think it was 89 and trucks that could be found with them.
There are two vesions a 4X2 and a 4X4 unit. A disiel will bolt up to a 460 as well but the gear ratios are closer together in the disiel unit.
Not sure how it would perform in a street rod truck but I am sure it would be no different than any other truck trans you could find.
If you have a 4X2 truck I would look into installing a top loader trans. It will hold up to any thing you can throw at it. If you can find a top loader with a big in and big out put shafts then it would be the stronger unit. There any different tail shaft lengths for top loaders and the mustang having the shortest.
If you're building a truck street rod, you may want a performance transmission rather than a ZF. The ZF is strong enough (470 ft-lbs.) but it's ratios are quite wide with a granny 1st and an OD 5th. For a performance tranny, a Tremec TKO 5 speed or a T56 6 speed makes a lot more sense. A G-Force modified T5 might stand up to the abuse as well.

That's what I was thinking. A 3550 would be another option. I just don't know if I'd trust a T-5, no matter how modded it was. Heck, a modded T-45 might work too. God knows I've dished out plenty of abuse to the Tri-Ax shifted T-45 in my 450 horse supercharged Cobra. They don't start breaking until you get extreme traction.
the dieles zf is no good for the 460 because the starter for the zf bolts into teh bellhousing. the diesel starter bolts in teh block and does not have the mounting holes in teh bellhousing for the 460 starter
i'm not sure if that is possible because the tabs might not be there. but i could be wrong, i've never seen a diesel zf. check it out, you very might be able to do so. i got real lucky w/ the combo i found
