Recently had my ABS lamp light up...Is there a way to scan for the trouble code and diagnos this without a visit to the dealer? I have a scanner, but it's for older Fords(my previous Broncos). Thanks for any info!!
Most likely it is your speed sensor that mounts on top of the rear diff. My ABS light would come when first cranked and then turn off. However, once the truck moved the ABS light would come on and stay on. This is a common problem on expy/navigators. A new sensor cost about $18 at the Ford dealer and takes about 10 minutes to replace. Simply remove the bolt holding the old one in, unclip the wiring harness, and pull it out.
Mine was on and I bought the sensor, but it didn't help. Had a bad solder at the module. Now I have an extra sensor. Sensor is cheap though, so it's worth it to check it first.
Good luck.
I don't think the ABS code can be pulled from the OBD-II...at least that's what I've read on here.
You may want to do a continuity check on the sensor and make sure the resistance readings and voltage readings are correct across the connectors. Those readings should be in any shop manual like Haynes or Chilton's.
Good Luck!

Well, actually the ABS codes can be read but only if you have the proper diagnostic tool! Problem is that other than the AutoDiag by DiagTek (requires PDA like Palm), most of these tools are way to cost prohbitive for us shadetree mechanics ($1,500 and up).
As for the ABS light, a bad or intermittent ground from the battery can also cause the problem. I had an intermittent ABS light which could be cleared by turning the truck off then back on. I checked the sensor and replaced the front pads/rotors and still got an intermittent ABS caution light! We bought the truck used and the battery terminals had quite a build up of scale/corrosion and when we got our first cold snap here in Houston (cold for us), the battery faltered so I replaced it. I had to replace the calmp on the positive lead when I replaced the battery but after cleaning off the terminals and adding the felt washers, no more corrosion and no more ABS light!
I'll check my battery terminals too. I recently had a issue where I had the battery cables unhooked. That sounds like an easy fix. I'll keep my fingers crossed and try that! Thanks to everyone for their responses!!!!!!
Cleaning the battery terminals didn't help, so today I will pick up the diff mounted speed sensor at NAPA. Checked with my Ford parts counter guy at the local dealer-COMMON problem. He says he usually sells 60 or more of these a year. THANKS again to everyone for their help!!
Well, replacing the rear end mounted sensor was cheap and easy enoungh...but, it did not get the ABS light to turn off. Any other hints prior to paying a dealer to read the codes???
Called my local Ford dealer $72 to hook up, local tire/mechanic $69 to plug in... Any other easy common things to check or fix prior to going to a professional??? Thanks again for any and all tips!!!
I was just going to ask for some help in diagnosing an ABS light. I also have one that comes and goes with no rhyme or reason. Shutting the engine off and then restarting seems to get rid of it for the day, but then a day or two later, it returns. For 16 bucks, changing out the sensor seems like the only way to go. Thanks for all the info in advance.
