i just got a '82 f250 w/ 300ci and c6 trans. i know the rear is a dana 60 w/ 4.10 gearing. is this a good truck to haul trash and to tow cars and light trucks? i got this truck hoping it would be good as a work truck...was i right by thinking it?
That sounds like a good combo, the six is definately a reliable engine and with the gearing /tranny combo you have it should pull just about anything you attach it to.
I agree w/ acerockola... that combo should pull anything around that you can throw at it... just don't expect it to be able to maintain highway speeds while towing real well, due to the lack of high end in the I-6.
You got the right gearing though, and the 300 is a bulletproof engine.
I had a buddy who plowed snow in the 70s with a similar truck (4x4) who had a partner with a GMC 350 V8. The six plowed rings around the 350 V8 - you will have a great workhorse, but not a racehorse. I would rather have a worker than a speedster anyway.
Enjoy it.

I had a f150 with an I6 with 308 gears, and used it for pulling grain wagons, and other assorted farm stuff, and frankly it out pulled my 1 ton chev with a well built (for pulling ) 454, and 4.11 gears, atleast around the farm, and to town at slower speeds I only used the 1 ton for hauling the stock trailer, after the first time I had to use the f150 one time to go to town, and get grain, and I was pulling 2 250bushel grain wagons loaded with corn, it just plain out pulled the big block
Personally I feel for flat low end pulling power the I6 was the best engine ford ever made too bad they quite making it. And if you ever doubt that the I6 is a good design for pulling go look at a semi they are all powered by inline 6 cyl engines
OK, the I-6 really is a great pulling engine. But let's not get too carried away.
I bought my '79 with a 300. It wasn't my first I-6, either. I've also had two '65's, one w/ a 300 and the other w/ a 240. Great, reliable engine and the best pulling motor I've seen for 300 cubes.
However, I decided to swap the I-6 for the 390. Make no mistake, the 390 outpulls the the 300 in any contest. If anybody wants to challenge that point, I'll gladly throw on the tow rope and drag them around the parking lot.
My point is, if you want a good work engine that is reliable and won't guzzle gas like a big block, then the 300 is your ticket.
But don't expect it to perform like a big-block (Ford anyways, the 454 is a Chebby, after all)
I've owned two I-6's in both a 1980 F150 and 1991 F150. Best damn engine I've owned in 27 years of driving. I pulled a 19 ft. Larson All American boat around for 8 years with the 1991. The automatic with the I6 has more torque than the manual, small block V8 !
