Drifting

I have a 1999 E-150 with a 4.2Lt. engine. When I am driving it has the feel of being blown across the road. It has recently had a complete new differential, however the problem was there prior to this job. I did install an aftermarket steering damper in the hopes of tightening the steering. Although it may not be that at all. I did find out than an extra leaf was installed to "BEEF" up the suspension. The shocks are new and the front end is all good. Any help with this will be appreciated, Thanks.

Swap your front tires, it may just be "radial pull" as my dad puts it... IT may also be in need of an alignment.... If that doesn't cure it check the brakes, there could be one sticking.

Thanks for your reply, I recall the van has had NEW tires and the alignment was recently done. It is like you are in a wind storm? I did some research and the front tires are out farther than the rear. There is a TSB on the appearance of dog tracking, however that is not the complaint. I am lost at finding the actual cause? I will not see the Van until Saturday so I will swap the tires at that time, although I cannot see that being the cause. I have driven the Van on numerous occasions with the same results after some changes. Would the suspension be the cause since it is a half ton with beefed up springs. Thanks again.

Not likely, my 1992 has a 3/4 ton suspension under it... Still 1/2 tone axles, but sits higher under load than a 3/4 ton. I had this problem right after new tires were installed, we swapped the fronts and it cleared up.

I have a 91 E150 Club Wagon that I picked up with 131k on it a couple of months back. On the highway, I notice that the steering is sloppy (wanders as if it was windy). It isn't very noticable at low speed, though. When I took it in to have the oil change, they said the steering gearbox was going and that's why there was so much play in the steering.

I could not believe that the BOX would be gone, however, I will disconnect the pitman arm and see how the play is.
Thanks.

My wanders all over the road like a pregnant hippo wearing roller skates!

I tried that adjustment screw on the box itself, which tightened it, but it still wanders. (on a brand new set of tires & is still the same).

I have about 15-20 degrees of slop in my steering & I've traced it to the box. I got someone else to turn the wheel, I could see the rag joint moving & the input shaft to the box moving, but nothing out from where the pitman arm attaches.

There's a company out there that recons the boxes, but can't remember who they were: I'll repost when I find out.

TSB on Dog Tracking, Not applicable. I took the entire front end apart and found NO problems. I had the alignment shop check the van out and it was recommended to replace the front coil springs then they could align it, height difference in the front end. I also found a very smalll belt shift in two of the tires, I plan on replacing all 4 once again. I will continue on my quest and keep everyone updated with new information.

I having wandering but it is associated with the rear tires. With snows tires on, the van tends to wander in the front. Put the 'summer' tires on, everything fine. Since it snows here, put the snows back on and then installed a Roadmaster Active Suspension. The wandering was cut down sigfinicantly with the suspension kit installed. This is the second set of snow that we have installed, the first set (used from '99 to '02) never had the problem. This second (used from '03 to now) was a replacement for the first set which were recalled by Goodyear (4 ply to 6 ply tires).
