Does anybody know; how freely should the clutch fan spin when cold (by hand)
On my 2000 F350 7.3L is quite stiff, even in @ 50 deg; wondering if this could be the reason why fuel mileage is hurting??
In 20 deg temps I can drive the truck 10 miles and the lower radiator hose (water going back into engine) is very cool. This doesn't seem right. It would appear that it is over cooling.
Check your thermostat, it probably stunk open that why it don't heat up. = fan when engine is running the fan loosens up when cold. check it after you run engine few miles within 1 min of stopping engine. it will be looser. mine is
when cold the fan is hard their is grease oil in their when you turn on engine it centifuge to side then fan is free when cold= try it run you engine when cold for 3 to 4 minutes turn off then try with hand within 1 minute it will be free. when hot it will tighten uo by the y mettel spring in fan
how freely should the clutch fan spin when cold (by hand)...
There should be no drag, what so ever on the fan. As a matter of fact, whenever I find and drag in the testing of it by hand, it suggested to me that it would be time to replace it. Not that I'm near the brightest person in the world, however, I find it difficult to associate the thermostat with the fan's drag factor. If the fan is electrically controlled/driven, the thermostat has no relevancy to it. (( But I'm sure there are more truly experienced Techs out there that will be better able to address this issue ))
