temp too hot?

Hi guys, after being suspect of a bad dash gauge i installed a aftermarket temp gauge. It was showing 210 deg. Is this too hot for a 180 deg. thermostat installed? I have just changed the radiator, hoses, thermostat, fan clutch. and the water pump. any ideas?

The 180 on the Tstat just means that is the temp it opens at. If you are in a hot area (So. Cal??), then 210 is not real surprising. That's partly why the system is pressurized - to keep the water/glycol from boiling too early. It also helps if you have a 50/50 mix of glycol and water for best heat transfer.

You are also assuming the aftermarket gage is accurate...

A 180* thermo starts to open up at 180* but usually isnt fully open till around 200* and by then your temp could run on up to 210* - 220* before the flow of cooling drops the temp back down to 180* or below.
