dial up or dsl?

thinking of getting dsl. right now i have 56k which connects at 41000 if i'm lucky. most of the time i have to connect 2-3 times just to get on line. i'm feed up with the service i'm getting, and from what i hear all the other dialup companies around here are about the same. so i would like to know about dsl good or bad. is it worth the extra money? is it that much faster than what i have? does anyone have dsl through alltel? and do they provide good service?
thanks for the comments and suggestions

dial up or dsl?

I have DSL in Locust Grove through Bellsouth. I used Mindspring before Earthlink bought them, but when their merger went through, I qiut because of bad service. I love the Bellsouth setup. I mostly use pcpitstop.com for speed measurements, and average between 1275 to 1350 download, and 250 to 350 upload. I would hate to know I ever had to go back to a dialup again...

As much as my wife and I are on the computers, 3 in the house off a network through the DSL, it pays for the extra costs by the time saved...

Just info...

DSL is A LOT faster. I am into downloading music, on my 56k, it would download at an average of 3-4 kb/sec and the highest of about 6kb/sec which took about 20-30-40 minutes just to download a 4-5 minute song. With DSL, i can download at an average of 40kb/sec and download a 4-5 minute song, in 2 minutes!!

Also, you don't have to wait for it to dial-up that takes forever. DSL, you click sign on, wait 2-3 seconds and you're on and ready to hit FTE!!

I just tried the http://www.pcpitstop.com site with a new setup on a cable modem and got 2139 Kb/s download and 245 Kb/s upload speed. I can live with that

I have a cable connection and would, with out a doubt, pay extra for a cable or DSL connection just so I won't have to use a Dial Up Modem!

dial up or dsl?

I have DSl through Earthlink and it is well worth the price. I have always been pleased with their customer service. There is a company that works with your local ISPs called Covad. If you go to there website (covad.com) and enter your address, it will come up with a list of who all provides service in your area. Then you can price shop for the best deal. I have several friends in my area who hace dsl through MSN and they always seem to be on the slow end of things and have had bad luck with customer service, so it does pay to shop around and ask others in your area. I have also had cable internet service and was really happy with it, as well. I agree that it would be very hard to go back to dial-up service now.

Good Luck,
Jayson
