I have a 1995, 2wd, 3.0 Liter, XLT Ranger. It handles and steers well, but when I go over a bumpy road it makes this clunk, clunk sound. It seems to emanate from a source that's under the cabin area. I replaced the shock absorbers, which were definitely worn out, but I still have this clunking sound when I go over bumps. Do all rangers ride and sound like this? I acquired this truck as a used vehicle, so I'm not familar with how Ranger's ride. This one seems rough as a corn cob. I have crawled underneath the truck and wiggled and shook everything I can, but nothing looks worn or loose. Any ideas?
I've come across fuel lines that have fallen out of their steel retainer clips that have caused rattles. Also, look at the rear shocks carefully to see if the upper "can" is scratching the lower section of the shock. If there are scratches in the paint on the lower portion, you can assume the upper "can" is hitting it when you go over bumps. Also, check to make sure the spare tire is installed securely, as well as the jack (on S-cab).
Sometimes the obvious is over looked. I found my spare tire, which is not the orginal mini spare, was just laying in the holder. Loose as a goose. I was able to remove the eyebolt from the bottom and screw it in from the top. Works like a champ. Also found the lug nut wrench just laying in the jack storage area. Wrapped an insulating cloth around it because it's a T-bar wrench. If these were not the cause of the noise, they certainly contributed. Thanks for opening my eyes to the possible easy solution.
