clunking in front when braking on 05 escape

Have an 05 escape 4x4. When you apply the brakes you sometimes will hear a clunking sound from the right front end area. The clunking is a continual clunking sound until you let up on the brake pedal. It does not make this sound any other time and it does not make the sound everytime you apply the brakes. Have taken the wheels off and checked brakes and nothing missing or broken and everything seems tight like it should. Have replaced the brakes on this vehicle and our 07 escape and 08 f150 several times over the years. The sound did not start with a brake change, it just all of a sudden started.
What is going on? at a loss and can't seem to find anything else loose on the shaft or joints or struts so far.
Thanks.
