Unhappy Heater Door Blend Problem

1998 Ranger 4x4 Super Cab 3.0 v6
I just bought this truck and apperently have many of the typical problems. I have worked through most of them on my own and with help but now my heater is blowing some warm air no matter where the temp dial is set. Dial is ok not cracked, if I fold down the glovebox I can hear the acctuator working? A friend who is a mechanic said that dealer charges lots of $$$ for the fix depending on a cracked plenum(approx 10hrs labor to remove dash) or door blend. My friend said he knew a guy that would use a 2" hole saw to remove enough plenum plastic to work on the problem to fix then just place the plastic piece drilled out back in. Should I do this?
