Three Gauge Pillar
Oil Pressure, 0-100 PSI
Transmission Temperature, 100-250 degrees
For the third gauge, the options I am considering are:
Oil temperature 100-250 degrees
Oil temperature 140-300 degrees
Water temperature 100-250 degrees
Since the truck already has a water temp "gauge" (I know- it's a glorified idiot light, just like the oil pressure ), I felt that monitoring oil temp in addition would be kind of a "belt and suspenders" approach. I also am leaning towards the 100-250 degree range gauge, since I'd be kinda screwed if I got above 250 degrees anyway and the range matches the Tranny temp gauge.
Here are my questions:
Any reason why I should monitor the water temperature (a second time) rather than the oil temp?
Which oil temp range gauge would you go with and why?
What order would you install the gauges (top to bottom of pillar)?
In addition to the factory water temp "guage" (which is supposed to be real), the ECU monitors engine temps and will go into the limp-home mode if it detects high temps. There have been a few reports that indicate the temp guage gave some warning before this occurred.
I thought it was an idiot gauge and only went up to a set point and stayed there until the engine overheats. I also thought that somebody posted that the oil pressure "gauge" reads at a fixed point until the pressure gets below 3 psi, then the idiot light comes on and the party is over.
Is the factory volt meter a go/no-go gauge as well? Please enlighten us!

The oil pressure "guage" is truly a glorified idiot light.
I have no first-hand knowledge of the voltage guage (that's also supposed to be real), but from what I've read and the way it appears to function in my truck, I'd say it is just not sensitive enough to predict/warn of impending trouble. So, in my eyes, it's a go/no-go guage.
I'm not sure whether or not this thread is too old to continue, but I was wondering if you did go with a pillar mounted gauge setup?
If so can you give some details as to what brand pillar pod & what gauges you went with?
Mucho Thanks!
Nope. I couldn't justify the expense after the Bank's Stinger and Trancommand. I ended up just going with an AutoMeter Z-series Tranny Temp gauge(it looks closest to stock gauges) mounted on the steering column in an AutoMeter column mount. I got all of the parts and info on install at DSI. I'm happy with it.

I just ordered VDO gauges trans temp and oil temp going with the pillar mount. Just wanted to say thanks for passing along the install info.

My question is... Can these A-pillars be painted to match the interior of the vehicle OR better yet.... Can they be bought colored already? Seems to me that if its the color of the interior, in my case gray, that it would look more "factory".
Any ideas?
thanks
