Don't bother with XP go to 2000 pro if you can.
Much better security.

That's true, to a point. 2000 now has 4 service packs, and is generally more common among corporate and even military systems. However, some people find 2000 kinda bland. As for networking and security, yes but for ease of use and overall experience what better than XP (experience). It is getting better too. Microsoft is constantly coming out with new updates and security patches. Plus, it has the new system error feature that won't crash your system every time an error occurs, making it a more friendly program. just my $.02

In XP go to Control Panel. Select Administrative tools, then Services. Scroll down to "Messenger" and double click. When the properties box opens up, select "disabled" under startup type. This is a built in feature of Windows that allows anyone on the net to "instant spam" you. It has nothing to do with MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger, etc., so disabling it won't harm either of those programs if you have them on your computer.
This is all 100% true. While you're in there, disable the "alerter" too. I don't think popup stoppers will work on the messenger services.
