well, i had to get another HD (one i had laying around) and format that and reinstal win 98. All is working now. I have the orgional HD as a slave for now untill i transfer all the info off of it that i need/want. For not being all that computer smart, im damn proud of what ive done
OK...so i'm crusing around fte and every once in a while a screen will pop up that says "do you want 3 extra inches" or some other crap like that. It seems like half of them are trying to sell me something to block them. I have adaware 6 and the google pop up blocker. they never have any color pictures or anything, but they have those dashes and dot symbol things.
ok so i just got one. its a grey box with a blue stripe accross the top that says meesenger service. it that has the description of some explicit site and instructions to type the site into the browser before hitting ok. ever seen these?

In XP go to Control Panel. Select Administrative tools, then Services. Scroll down to "Messenger" and double click. When the properties box opens up, select "disabled" under startup type. This is a built in feature of Windows that allows anyone on the net to "instant spam" you. It has nothing to do with MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger, etc., so disabling it won't harm either of those programs if you have them on your computer.
I run XP and I don't ever get those. The only time I've seen them was during christmas at my brother's. I upgraded him to XP (from ME) and noticed the popups before and after. It was the fault of the AOL software.
d/l popup stopper
it costs like $5 for the full verson and i think it works well, if youre using IE as a browser.
OBTW, back to my orgional post question. Im writing this on my desktop (the one that gave me all the problems) but ive got a few more issues to work out yet. Anyone know how to transfer an address book from my email program (juno) to another HD? and also, where do i get a drier for my TV tuner card? its made by ATE and is a Rage 128, but i cant seem to find a driver for it.
http://ftp.cvut.cz/local/drivers/ There's one link, always go to the manufacturer of the card first for the latest driver. If they have it, lol.
Have quite a few more links for great drivers and such, can't track them down yet, may be on a HD that's currently undocked. I'll have more by tonight if you need them.
First, thank you f350 for letting me borrow your thread. and thank you droptop, i do run win 2000 but i managed to figure it out. and i plan on becoming a member as soon as i pay of my credit card.
People with broadband connections, particularly cable users will get those "windows messenger" popups if they don't disable the service. In some of the later W-XP versions Messenger is disabled by default.
Those are two more good sites for drivers. Registration is free at both. Hope they can be some help to someone,, someday
Odd thing, those popups, Torque. Know a bunch of people running XP, both home and pro and none have ever had that or had to turn it off. Like I said, only time was at my brother's with upgrading XP and on a DSL connection. Maybe it's a mid-west thing

I just bought a new desktop with XP. I had to put EACH address into a folder on the old computer (using "save as" under File), then the nice folks at Gateway transferred this over to the new computer for me. I had to open each address from the file, but each time I did, a box appeared in the upper-right-hand corner that said, "add to address book." I clicked on that and all the info was transferred to the new address book. I hope someone else knows a better way, but it took me maybe all of five minutes.
