I try to be PC for the most part, even though I think most of it is BS, I figure it's just common respect for others, however, this is just going way too far.
I'd like to get an honest opinion on this from Native Americans (PC). I fail to see this as derogatory, in fact, I think it's more of a tribute than anything.
Try as I might to keep an open mind, I fear California is losing theirs.
We have a number of lakes here in the Land of 10,000 lakes named Squaw Lake, which is a derogatory name for a woman's private parts.
The Native Americans really could care less. There are any number of issues they face that a courageous politician could help advance instead of this most superficial, feel-good one.
I don’t’ think being respectful of others really has much to do with political correctness. In my opinion, it seems that most of the PC chatter comes from fringe elements that repeatedly tells both the supposed victims and alleged aggressors that something is not acceptable. After sufficient exposure the fringe element eventually convinces some people on both sides of the issue that something is not right. At this point the problem becomes self-sustaining and the instigators are free to move on and create some new injustice.
Come to think of it -- All the “Ronalds” in the world are being mocked/ridiculed/demeaned by the clown mascot/spokesman of McDonalds. Oh my… How unfair!
However the article is WRONG WRONG WRONG. California is NOT the first state to do this, MAINE is. 'Bout 3 years ago the schools had to remove those names. One did get around redesigning the mascot by changing the name from redskins to warriors and kept the symbol.
I agree waxy, this is a bunch of crap!We have the same thing going on here in Maine. They are making us take anything of the maps that relates to the word squaw.Case in point,Squaw Pan Lake. Now,when I go to Squaw pan,I don't go there to get a squaw,I go to catch a fish.Squaw mountain.I don't go to Squaw Mt.to go sking with a bunch of squaws.Even my Indian friends, which i have quite a few, call these places by their name and are no way offended.I'll continue to call them what i want. They can call someone who cares.
California would lose its identity if they didnt keep doing stupid stuff like that.
Californians go on and on about the states economy. Wonder if they ever sit back and think where the money goes?
