I'd answer No to both. Why? Because I wouldn't want to lose my child.
If I had no child, and wasn't married, I know I would go for tripling my income and starting over. Life is full of experiences. And to experience wealth, would be grand.
To lose my life, I would do it, for a worthy cause. I have jumped in front of a crowd, to save them from a run away horse. He was running very fast right towards people in a line that didn't notice him coming. Without thinking, I threw my arms up, and ordered him to stop, which he did.
I also checked a woman, after her car was smashed and gas was spilling all over. There had to be 30 people watching at the streetside, but nobody would approach the car. After I yelled if she was ok, I ran into the street and opened the door. It was bad. But, I still felt the risk if the gas was ignited.
It just depends on my reaction at that time. I am a person who tries to save the world anyways.
Not to taint the future responses (but this probably will), but no one questioned (at least, out loud) the element of time to question #1. If starting over to earn 3X, no one questioned how long it would take to get there? Some stated at what age they would be and to be honest, I didn’t think about looking back or forward in life, my perspective is from right now. So would those who answered yes, would your answer be any different if time to earnings were beyond what you thought?
2. Not if your smart. I've been dumb a time or two, and risked more than I should have. FIRE/EMS, I'm sorry, but not if your smart. Volunteers are a critical part of the public safety network. Without them so many people would be without help. But please dont put the hero hat on all by yourself. Yes, public safety personel risk life and limb on occasion. But you dont brag. Humility is important. I'm sorry if I come accross as lecturing. I've been in the game 14 years 3 months, arrogance hurts the publics perception.
Always, "Your perception, is Your reality."

2- To clarify - I WOULD lose my life, or MIGHT lose my life? Makes a big difference to me. I would RISK my life to save another at any time, however actually sacrificing my life would require the person saved to be someone I dearly loved.

If you… where put into a position where you had the chance to save a man’s life, but in doing so, cost you your own life, what would you do? Would the answer be different for a friend or a stranger?
What would you do for each?
1. yes in a heart beat. 2. it depends on the other person, if they are young then, yes because they have just started, me I have been here a while. If they are an older person then I am sorry but they would have to be family or a friend. Hope that answers your hypo questions.
HHHmm.....depends on a few factors, I like my job, and the pay sucks but what I do it for is good and right. Now in my current standing with the military. If they would say right now you can walk out that gate with an 'Other than honorable, or honorable discharge' I would have to take it. As it is better than a dishonorable I am ATM facing. Not getting, nor getting if I cna keep my act straight, long story there, but I like what I do for the REASONS I do it. My job sucks. But it is the ultimate goal that I do not mind as much.
Second one. depends greatly on the differant variables. What it is that is risking this persons life and how this situation occured, WHO this person is. I mean, my family or gal I will save regardless a starger or friend depends, a good friend, yes I will do what I cna regardless of consequences to save them and help them . Just depends really.
To the first part, without a dioubt, as long as the physical capability to do so came in the bargain.
To the second part: I would like to think I am that noble but only a true test would answer that. More likely for a loved one? I would imagine. I am pretty sure I would not give my life to save someone who knowingly took disreguard for their own by endangering themself.
