If you...

If you… where given the opportunity to triple your income, but to do so, you were told that you’d have to give up all those years of seniority and status and start over and relearn from the beginning, would you do it? Why or why not?

and...

If you… where put into a position where you had the chance to save a man’s life, but in doing so, cost you your own life, what would you do? Would the answer be different for a friend or a stranger?

What would you do for each?

1- In a heart beat. Both the challenge and the potential reward are powerful draws for me. I couldn't resist.

2- To clarify - I WOULD lose my life, or MIGHT lose my life? Makes a big difference to me. I would RISK my life to save another at any time, however actually sacrificing my life would require the person saved to be someone I dearly loved.

(1) Yes, but only if I did not have to move or be on travel constantly – been there, done that. It’s just not worth it.

(2) This is a question that I have asked myself many times. Given the time to think before I acted, I am not sure that I would for a stranger. A group of us had this discussion once – ran scenarios on it. Way too many variables there. On the other hand, for a family member? Yes.

It is a natural tendency for people to respond to a hypothetical situation in the best way, and to the actual - maybe not. That said, of course I would.

Hypothetical questions are hard to answer.I'd need more info to make an informed decission on which way I'd go.

DRRanger,

I'm 43 now so I could still change careers and put in a respectable number of years in that new field. If I were nearer to retirement I might feel a little different with possibly losing my pension, benefits, etc.

As far as the other part of you proposition, I hope I never am faced with the situation. My wife would kill me if I got dead saving someone else and leaving my son fatherless. I know my reflex would be to try since I have done before but didn't get hurt even.

Answer to number one would be a stout and surly No. I love what I do now and money is nowhere near as important to me as that will ever be,, now or ever.

Number two is easy as well,,, Yes,, I do it everyday and still wake up the next day. Anyone ever seen Groundhog Day with Bill Murray? The full explanation to this is quite esoteric, so I'll leave it be at that, but survival instinct is Very hard to overcome and yet emotional bonds of such great magnitude do exist to overthrow one of the most base of human "reactions". Time to get dinner,,, to be continued later,,, if I don't come across anyone in trouble, that is

#1 - Absolutely, assuming the new job wasn't something I knew I wouldn't like, and the current job wasn't something I absolutely loved. Present job, yeah, I'd be gone before they knew I left.
I figure, I'm 26 now, and, face it, I'll have to do it at least one more time in my life anyway, why not do it now for triple the $$$.. Money can't buy happiness, but it can pay it off if you've already bought it.

#2 - Any volunteer firefighter or EMS has already answered this question the day they signed up, so yes.

But, as I said before, if it was a situation where I KNEW I was going to die for another, I'd wanna know who it was I was going in after. Not to sound hypocritical, but they better be worth it...lol.
In reality, we risk our lives every time we walk into a structure fire, rescue someone trapped in an MVA, it's not something you think about, you do it because you can.

Sounds like you need more info before you reply. Fair enough.

Seeing that this an open-ended question, your can fill in the data you need that would support your response...

And thanks for the comments

Part 1:Would i be giving up any retirement benifits? How old am I?Would i be training in anything I had previous experience in?Am i married?Do i have children living at home?Do i like the job I'm at vs. the job I'll take?
Part 2:Upon further consideration I would say no.Not for a friend.
