I've noticed a couple of times that my dipstick is not seating all the way on the tube. My initial thought is that I will squeeze the the part that slides over the tube a little bit with some pliers to see if that will hold it. It is loose, but does anybody else have any thoughts.
Well I figured someone would say it right away but no one else has yet so I will. The dipstick coming out is one sign of blowby beginning to rear it's ugly head. The pressure builds up and has to get out someplace. A borderline case may be helped by making sure the PCV system is all hooked up and working right. It doesn't fix the problem but it may get rid of the symptom for a while anyway, depending on how much you drive.
Somebody was talking about that on channel 19 the other night where I happened to be driving. Somebody said, "That doesn't sound right, if that was normal there would be dipsticks all over the road". Somebody else said, "But there are!". This all in the middle of a bad snowstorm...
But yeah, it's blowby that's too much for the PVC to take care of. Compression rings are getting tired. Like he said, check the PVC and make sure it's not plugged.
Well, there's got to be some pressure in there, right? The dipstick does not hold on to the tube like it should, so the slightest bit of pressure will lift it. Isn't another symptom of blowby oil in the air filter? I have none there.
The pcv valve is brand new, so I would hope its not already clogged, but I will check.
Oh well, either way I'm going to drive it till it pukes!
yeah, mine lifts the dipstick too. I figure it's just from driving with my foot to the floor, combined with the plugged filter on the breather cap. Oh well, when it dies, a diesel will take it's place.
There are varying degrees of blowby from just a little to smoke pouring out everywhere, and everything in between. Oil in the air filter is a symptom of the final stages. By the time it does that, it's really bad and has been bad for quite some time. I'm not saying rebuild your engine over a tiny bit of blowby, but at least do the rest of us a small favor and be sure your PCV systems are working as best they can. If you're going to drive around with a wore out polluting old engine (and I've done it myself plenty) it's the least you could do.
