i've been looking for a dipstick and tube for a 300 for a while now. i've been to a dozen junkyards and the local ford dealer. most of them look at me like they've never heard of this engine. for some reason, most junkyards here don't let you walk around and look.
the block is 1982. the hole just infront of the engine mount has a diameter of .375" the hole towards the rear of the block has a plug in it and i have an extra oil pan in my garage with a place for a dipstick.
well i'm sure glad you know how to use those books, cause most people around here sure don't. i've been driving around without a dipstick for 2 years now.
I'm having the same problems finding the dipstick, even with the part numbers. There's a dipstick in the engine now, but it's not original. I just spent a lot of money having the entire engine rebuilt and I'll just never know how much oil to add if the dipstick that's in there now ever registers low. I'll just keep the oil changed often and cross my fingers, I guess...

There should be an engineering number on the dipstick you have now. Post it here...let's see what it's for.

Retroluxe...I had a similar problem. Next time you change the oil, fill the oil pan up to one quart less than it should be. Wait for it to drain to the pan and mark that level with a metal scribe or something. Unless my thinking is wrong, that should be your "add a quart" mark until you can find a real stick.
My '64 with a 292 came to me with (and still has) a transmission fluid dipstick in the oil stick tube. I was worried about it, too, so I changed the oil and refilled, leaving a quart shy. The line on the tranny stick that reads "add pint" is perfect for where "add quart" should be. I couldn't believe it...there is probably some old grease monkey out there who knows that a tranny dip stick out of a '74 Skylark fits the oil stick for a Ford 292!
