JBL Audio system

i have a 97explorer sport, which has the "premium" JBL 5 speaker audio system. i'm assuming its supposed to be a top of the line system for a stock car. anywho, the system sucks, none of the speakers are blown, so im assuming its due to a weak amp in the stock deck. so i went to a car audio store near me and they said there's a seperate amp used to power the speakers on the passenger side behind/under the glove box. they were gonna charge quite a bit of money for installation just for a 150doller deck (total wouldve been around $300) well this sounds like BS to me and want to know if theres any truth behind it, cuz i just wanna buy a deck and install it myself. i dont want to run into "problems bypassing the amp" they said. so any help would certainly be appreicated,

The amp is located behind the passenger side rear panel, not under the glove box. If you buy an aftermarket head unit, I do not beleive you will be albe to use the stock sub. An amp bypass cable is available that will allow you to disconnect the existing amp and still use the factory wiring. I did this on my old 92 and it worked great.
