Can somebody post a pic or 2 of what the factory amp looks like in our trucks?
I drive a 96 ford f250 and according to a local car audio place they are blaming my factory amp for some sound issues I'm having with trying to install an aftermarket deck but I don't think they truly know what they're talking about. I've tried looking for the amp and I just don't see it and I'm beginning to think I don't even have one. I've read it's located up and right of the gas pedal but the car audio place said Its behind my dash and would be very difficult to get to??
welcome to FTE.
what type radio did your truck have, a premium sound system, or just an AM/FM cassette?
as far as i remember, the pickups were not made with the premium sound system, only the generic am/fm cassette player. and that was an all in one unit with no external amp. the external amp was a premium sound system thing.
I'm gonna go on a limb here and say they don't have a clue. I had no trouble at all installing my stereo with generic parts from best buy. Even with an amp there's not anything to it. Sometimes you need a resistor, that's about it.
I see no evidence of a premium sound system. My factory deck is an AM/FM cassette and I have no sub, just 4 speakers (2 in the door and 2 in the rear corners of the extra cab).
Go to another audio shop. Those guys will cause you nothing but problems. They are already finding reasons why it won't work/doesn't work, not trying to resolve the issue.
The guy I worked with at the audio place seemed to be full of bs. He claimed it was the factory amp that was not allowing sound to get to my speakers. He also told me it was a negative polarity system??
Well the next day I sat working on it and trying to figure it out and I got it to work great but only when the sound is faded to the rear speakers. When the sound goes to the front it stops and I get nothing??
Any ideas? My next step is going to be to pull the door panels and see if there is an issue with the connections especially the (-).
The best thing to do, is run new speaker wires to each speaker. I think the problem you are having is the head unit is a floating ground speaker output and the factory is usually a common ground through the wire harness.
Some high powered head units/amps do not like a common ground setup. You can smoke your head unit/amp with common ground setup!
According to the car audio place, they tried a 2nd aftermarket deck with the same result.
To be more clear, I will get sound from anywhere from a couple seconds to a couple minutes. Maybe it'll cut out on its own or I'll hit a bump and stops. When the sound is faded to the back I have no issues and it works perfectly.
