the last two of three times ive started my truck 2000 f-150 4.6 4x4 it has a loud whine from under the hood for 5 to 45 seconds. Sounds lke a belt , kinda...or possibly the power steering pump, any way its been really cold for the 2 days or so about -2 to a high of 3 degrees all day and night. is it the cold?has any one had this problem?? thanks
My 2001 150 lariat w 5.4 does the same thing and with mine i am sure its the serp belt they get stiff in cold weather ,I wouldnt worry about it to much but check the condition of your serpentine belt.
yea thats what i thought, its been so cold that i didnt even want to pop the hood and look! i found some posts on some people saying its there transmission whining at start up. its probobly just the p/s. if the p/s uses the same mercon thats in the tranny, isnt that synthetic?
I was going to ask the same question, my '03 F-150 does it too, it's been below freezing here for a couple weeks and it started making a noise under the hood for a short while at cold startup. I had a Toyota 4x4 that did this same thing at cold startup and it was the timing chain rattling, this sounds just like that. My Toyota engine was toast because of it, hope the Ford isn't experiencing the same problem!
Mine does the same thing when the temp gets down near zero. It's the power steering fluid being real thick. I have been trying to find out if there is any other power steering fluid to use but it all looks the same. Lucky for me it doesn't get that cold here very many days.
Chalk up two for me in the whine department. Both my trucks do the whine on startup. Talked to ford and they said it was ok and not to worry, Although i am worried because i don't see any other vehicles doing this? maybe a design flaw, or is it just something you have to live with?
Originally posted by leroys4wd mine sounds more like the sound an alternator makes when the bearings are bad, is that the 'whine' everybody else is hearing?
If upon starting in really cold weather, and you turn the steering wheel, and the whine changes, it's the PS pump.
The idler and tensioner bearings have been known to make noise sometimes too. It can be pretty hard to pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from.
the noise itself doesn't bother me because as stated above, it goes away in about 30 seconds. I just want piece of mind that it isn't doing any damage. From the posts I've read here, it sounds like everything is ok.
I think I'm going to use the Mobil 1 Synthetic trans fluid when I change my PS fluid. It meets Mercon specs, which is what Ford calls for there, but not Mercon V, which my transmission needs.
