Hello;
This will be my first full size truck. I had a 84 ranger that I drove until it was time to retire it. I have two friend that bought the 4.6 and they seem to like it, but I don't know anyone around here that owns a 5.4. I will drive the F-150 supercab 4x4 to work and make dump runs. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I had a F-150 (2000) with the 5.4, and I currently have a F-250 4x4 with the 5.4 and I'd definitely go for the 5.4. I also just drove the 2004 F-150 with the 5.4. It now has 300 (instead of 265) horsepower. It's the perfect motor for the truck, and it greatly increases your towing and payload capacities. Good luck.
In a 4x4, you really should go with the 5.4. I think you'll find the 4.6 to be a bit of a dog. And according to the EPA, they get the same gas mileage.
Nike....
I know you're new to this forum, but with that I don't know what kind of knowlege you bring with you. Keep in mind that on a 4x4 there is quite a bit of added weight to the overall vehicle.
As you peruse this site, you'll see that that engine-upgrade will cost you NO MORE than $800 to get, versus the smaller one....and I would WHOLEHEARTEDLY suggest doing it, if $800 is reasonable and within reach for you.
However, for what it's worth, I DID test drive a new Ford with the 4.6, and it was *sufficient* and pulled around *fine*....but in my mind, for $800, the added power on tap and no loss in stated fuel economy, it's a no-brainer. I'd be more-apt to consider the 4.6L if that was the only option with a manual tranny, but since it's not in the equation, I solidly sit with the 5.4L.
Hope that helps!
