All depends on your skill with a torch and a welder.

You would have to shorten the frame and rear driveline and, of course, have a short box. I don't think it would be too difficult but you I wouldn't trust myself to weld a frame.

We had a discussion a while back about the short box Supercab 4x4s. Someone swore Ford never made them. I have seen a couple in town which means either they did make a few or several people have made this conversion.

Is cutting and welding on a frame a good idea?

For someone with the right experiance, skill, and equipment, it is not a problem. The average do it yourself mechanic has none of the above. I concider myself a fairly good welder and would not think of trying to weld a frame myself.

I would definitely have a pro take care of that. What I am asking, is it good for a 4x4 frame? Will it hold up in the field? Doen't it weaken the frame??

If it's done properly it will be just as strong as the rest of the frame, in some cases even stronger. If you have it done take it to someone who specializes in frame work, not just anyone who can weld. In addition to making a proper weld/joint in the frame it's very important to make sure your measurements are dead on, so boht sides are exactly even, and that it's all aligned right when it's welded.
