I picked up a complete 460 today out of a 78 Mercury Marquis. It had an automatic transmission which I was able to get for $50 so I decided to go ahead and grab it and cross my fingers it's a C-6.
I think you might want to check your source of info biz4two. I'm DEFINITELY NOT an expert, but I believe alot of non-OD autos in at least F250s up through at least '89 are C6s. Correct me if I'm wrong. Supposedly the C6 out of an '83 will swap out with a non-OD auto in an '89. Check the cross refs.
Looks like I ended up with a C-6 afterall. For $50 I figured I couldn't go too wrong.
I read that the truck transmissions had a deeper pan. Other than this is there any difference between the truck (4x4) version of the C-6 and the car version? I'm wondering about the tail shaft. I know I can unbolt the tail and bolt my transfer case adapter to it but I'm wondering if the shaft itself will work with my NP205.

You might want to ask the author: "By Bob Ferguson" about the info posted. I was just pointing towards a link that I found in the Tech Articles section.
