How do I identify the axles under my truck?
How do I identify the Transmission?
Will the buckets from an extended cab fit my regular cab?
1 - You can start by telling us the year and model of your truck.
2 - Auto or manual? What engine? How many gears? Does it have overdrive? You can also post the TRANS code from the door post sticker and someone will decode it for you.
3 - Yes, all F-series and Bronco seats from 1980-1996 interchange.
Ford has already given you this info. But it is in code. In the drivers door jam-near the striker plate-there will be a factory sticker that has the VIN number and this info in code at the bottom of the sticker. Give us these code and the year of the truck and we can tell you what the truck was equipped with at the factory.
Ok, here are some codes and more info.
MFG Date: 09/89
GVW=268
Body Type=CJ4
Trans=W
Axle=39
springs=5F
I should note that it insures as a 1990.
Also PO says that it has f350 spring conversion. Any way for me to tell for sure?

Thanks for the decoding!
GVW=268 ( Should have a letter before the 268.) "F"= 8600 GVW and 133 inch wheel base 4x4 or "X"= 8800 GVW and 155inch wheelbase 4x4.
Body Type=CJ4 C=KNIT VINYL BENCH ;J= GRANITE COLOR (interior). 4=STYLESIDE PICKUP
Trans=W= MANUAL 5 SPEED HD Z-F (outstanding transmission)
Axle=39= 3.55 OPEN 6250 POUNDS CAPACITY
springs=5F 5= FRONT SPRING CODE FITA-5310-AHA. F=REAR SPRING CODE E7TA-5560-FA
Thanks a ton! Glad to hear about the transmission. The 4x4 works wonderfully and the truck runs like a champ. It is the 250HD im pretty sure.
The truck only has 80, 000 Kilometers on it with a strong 460.
Any way to identify the front axle.

I believe that the F250 HD had the Dana 50 in it. The F250 LD had the Dana HD44 in it. The hub size will tell you which front axle you have. The F250 LD will have the same diameter hub as the F150 4x4. I think.
Others on this forum will know for sure.
If you give the VIN number of your truck to the nearest Ford Parts Dealer-he should be able to tell you.
Go figure, I just switched careers from a long time computer tech to starting my apprentiship with FORD. 2months under my belt. I will check with the parts department tomorrow.
All supercabs got the Dana 50 along with all diesels and trucks with the snow plow package. For example my regular cab F250 with the 351 got the Dana 50 as part of the plow package.
The rear axle is the Sterling 10.25" Full floater. It is a good strong axle.
My Dana 50 front end has a "50" molded into the bottom of the diff housing. Yours might too if you want to check to be sure. Also, you have to take your hubs apart to see this, but the inside spline count is 30 on the Dana 50. The Dana 44 has quite a few less. Just a couple ways to tell for sure by looking at what you have.
Thanks for the axle ident tips. I just noticed that I have a warn hub on one side and a red(factory?) hub on the other. PO must have had to replace for some reason. If the wind wasnt blowing 8million miles an hour I would go out and look for a 50 stamp.
I just bought a parts truck to pick over. Extended cab diesel. I am going out to the farm on Saturday to do some stripping. All I can think of at the moment is: Doors, Dash Trim, Hood, Tailgate, wheels/tires, cabin light, bucket seats. It doesnt have a trans/transfercase, but the rest of the drivetrain is there. I have never bought a parts truck before let alone stripped one.
Geez, I should get some pictures going for you guys. Threads are always better with pictures.
What else should I think about when taking parts off this doner truck?
