Have a 1990 Ranger...great truck...204K miles and going strong...only major trouble is...tailgate will not open...probably one of those rods slipped or something...can't figure out how to get inside the TG or even take it off...any suggestions or help would be appreciated...Citico
First thing to do is get the tail gate off. A friend can help alot here. Use screw drivers or something slim and strong to to slide back the tail gate pins. (at the top) they are just spring loaded and should push in fairly easy. Next unclip the cable keepers. Next hold the tail gate at about a 45 degree angle and pull up on the pass side. It should slide right off. Now you can work with the tail gate on a table.
The handle is now your focus. Look underneith it, you should see rods, keepers, and the whole mechanism. It should remove with two bolts. Also take the tail gate pins loose. Now pop the rods out of their keepers on the handle. You should now be able to remove the whole assembly. Lay it all out on a table and make sure all the pieces are there. By now you will realize how simple it really is. More than likely a rod slipped out of one of the keepers. Just put it all back together with some sort of good lube and it should work great. Just in case you can't get it done, shoot me an email, I'm down in Austin and would be more than happy to help.
same thing happened to my 90 ranger. it just needed oiled up real well. when i pulled the handle up the arm wasn't pulling away far enough because it was just rusty. took it off like rubberduck said and lube'd it real nice problem solved.
