Exhaust size?

Apologies for the newbie question. Can anyone advise me what size exhaust i should put on my 1985 f100 302 efi? Currently it has a small- ish exhaust which sounds like a vaccum cleaner, it is about too fall off anyway, I wan't people to know what's up front. I don't want to put extractors on it (insurance will knock me back). I don't wan't to go too loud just something in between. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Chris

fordeverpower is right about the pipe size. Nothing below 2.5" for pipe.

The bigger the pipe, the more reduced your back pressure will be, thus giving you a small increase in horsy's and a little bit better gas mileage.

NOTHING BIGGER THAN 2.5 INCH & DUEL EXHAUST.
2 1/4 WOULD BE THE BEST CHOICE FOR DUEL EXHAUST.
IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH HP YOU HAVE.
LOG ON TO FLOWMASTERMUFFLERS & DYNO MAX FOR MORE INFO.

I'm running 2.5" duals, no headers, flowmaster mufflures, and no cross-over pipe, seems to have a real bark at 2000-2500rpm

yes but by going to big you will have no torque down low in the rpm range and this could make it difficult to get off the line.

it's got a nice rumble with lots of bass but no popping, it has a very smooth sound to it.

ACCORDING TO BORLA, FLOWMASTER,DYNOMAX & MEGAFLO EXHAUST COMPANYS, THEY ALL RECOMMEND 2.0 INCH DUEL EXHAUST OR 2.5 INCH SINGLE EXHAUST FOR THE 302.

A 2.5 INCH DUEL EXHAUST WOULD HAVE A DEEPER TONE, AND A CROSS AT LEAST 13 INCH IN FRONT OF MUFFLERS. 17 INCH PREFERED.

A FRIEND HAD A 351 FUEL INJECTED F-150 4X4 STOCK MOTOR OTHER THAN MSD IGNITION & K&N AIR FILTER, 1990 MODEL, IT RAN 16.1 @ 92MPH WITH 2.5 DUELS, FLOWMASTER DELTA FLOW 40 SERIES MUFFLERS AND CROSSOVER. THE EXHAUST GOT DESTROYED ON A ROCK WHILE 4 WHEELING. THE SHOP THAT REDONE IT RECOMMEDED 2 1/4 INCH DUELS WITH A CROSSOVER & FLOWMASTER DELTA FLOW 40 SERIES MUFFLERS.
THE TRUCK RAN A LITTLE QUICKER. 15.9 @ 94 MPH. SAME TRACK
( BRISTOL TN.) TRUCK HAD 79,000 ON FIRST RUN AND 87,000 ON SECOND RUN. OUTSIDE TEMP. WAS 85 DEGREES FIRST TIME AND 87 DEGREES THE SECOND TIME.

yes and that is due to torque, but you have to remember that you horsepower/torque curve changes when you modify any engine components, and if you do not modify your drivetrain to match, then your vehicle will run slower, in my case I have all the torque I could want due to 4.11:1 diff ratios and a t-18 tranny, and I needed a little more hp to motivate my tires in the mud.

you can't always build you truck to aftermarket specs, you have to build it for the way that you will use it.

2.25" duals, through single chamber 40's or 3 inch single through a 28 inch glass pack.

This is info for the way you will use it!!!
Its also by many years of trial and error... Suggestion was for, to access different companys and other people, to determine what works for the vehicle and type of driving it will encounter..........
