This is a new one on me! What do you think? I tried to check the engine oil yesterday and found that only the cable part came out of the dipstick tube with the handle! The flat metal part where you check the oil level was gone! I ran a magnet down the tube all the way to the oil level and didn't get it, or at least it didn't come back out. Will something that big and heavy have a risk of doing any damage under any foreseeable conditions, or should I just get a new dipstick and forget about it?
I'd go for the new dipstick. If you have a magnet on a flexible wand you might try fishing for it with the drain plug out. It's in the bottom of the pan and will do no harm.
I can't imagine what it would entail to "drop the pan" on one of these.....it's not easy on my '68 F250 so I doubt it'd be a breeze on these Expy's. I'm thinking along the same lines as hkiefus, it's probably down in the bottom just hanging out (its weight should keep it away from the crank) and I doubt it could work its way up as the oil pump has a big screen on it.
I thought my engine stick was just flat mettal with nothing on the end but the Trany stick is a cable with a plastic tab on the bottom with marks for oil level?
I got the new replacement dipstick today and it's not the same type. Instead of cable with flat metal on end, it's all flat metal wth corkscrews in it and it's made of two peices riveted together. Much harder to get in and out. I can't see any reason why it couldn't be made in one piece plus handle to make it easier to insert and retract, and to insure reliability. Where do those engineers come up with these ideas... recycle bins?

They've gotta continually change things to justify their existence. I'd bet many hours and much more $$$ went into that design.
