Hey just wanted to let any of you new Fe guys to watch out on pushrod lenghts. I installed a new cam in my Ford 390 and ground up my brand new cam. I have recently gone completely through the engine and found out that I had .080" preload on my lifters. OUCH!!!!!! It should be between .020" - .040" I have reacently order my pushrods and wating for them to get here so I can finaly start my truck back up. This is on a 390 engine with out adjustable rockers.
With that much preload, the motor should have really run like crap. I also thought I would need longer pushrods on my 390, so I bought a set of custom .060 longer smith bros. rods. Turned out they were too long. The motor ran like crap, sounded like it had a massive vacuum leak. Spent 2 minutes with it like that, before shutting it down and swapping in a used set of stock length rods. Runs perfect now.

With Ford making 4 different lengths for pushrods, which one is stock. I bent one and bought some more but the ones I bought are just a shade longer. I bought 9.59. What is the point of having 4 different lengths? Is this going to mess up my cam if I put them in?
Non adjustable valve train, hydraulic lifters, stock cam
