I have a 78 ford 4x4 supercab long box with a 400 4 speed. The spring in the front of the clutch peddle broke in half and I was wondering if anyone knew how to get the replacement one back into the little grooves? I tried to install it but I cannot get the spring compressed enough, (even by putting it between 2 bolts and flat bar) to get the sucker in? any ideas? I took it to 3 tranny shops and they just looked at me as if I was from space. New or nothing I guess. Let me know. thanks!
Are you talking about the spring from pedal arm to dash, that stretches as you push the pedal? If so, that's a bugger to get back on.
Several guys on this board have left it off and put a little stronger spring on the linkage by the trans to make up for it.
I managed to get mine back on - and I still have all of my fingers! I used a heavy wire (#9) and a long turnbuckle hooked to the front seat mount. Turned the turnbuckle to stretch the spring and used a prybar to push it into place and loosened the turnbuckle as the spring hooked into place. Then cut the wire out.
That is the one. I have tried everything and I guess I will leave it off and try the new spring in the other spot. I almost have all my fingers! Thanks for the info. I didn' think of that fix!
