Installing Explorer seats, console and OH console
I can also send detailed information with photos via e-mail if anyone is interested.
I haven't really thought about doing something like that before but it sounds pretty darn cool.
I would be very interested in some detailed instructions and photos, in any case. Can't post email addresses here, so you'll have to go to my profile and contact me that way...
When your done I can make a link in the tech info post.
Good luck with your new edition johare

NOTE: I am not sure how to get the photos to post. You can see the completed seats and OH console in my gallery.
Installing Explorer seats and center console
1999 Ranger XLT Sport X-Cab with 60/40 seats
New seats: 1999 Ford Explorer Sport 2dr
Console: 2001 Ford Explorer Sport 2dr
Process:
1. Removed original seats and middle seat belts.
2. Removed ashtray and passenger side air bag switch. Removed the air bag switch from its bracket and temporarily fastened it under the dash. The switch could be mounted in the new console but since I never turn the passenger air bag off I left it under the dash (held with plastic ties). I can access it if necessary by removing the front panel of the new console.
3. The dash is predrilled for the alignment pins and bolts for the Explorer console. (Photo #1)
4. Pull back the carpeting. You will have to remove the threshold plastic which is held in by clips. Just pull it loose. I also removed the plastic panels on the kick panels.
5. The console I got has a metal mounting bracket that mounts to the driveshaft hump and two metal tangs on the console slide into slots in the bracket to secure it. (Photo #2)
6. Position the console where it should fit with the mounting bracket in place and mark the mounting bracket mounting holes.
7. Remove the console and drill holes for mounting the bracket. I used ¼ inch sheet metal lag bolts that were ¾ inch long. Be sure to check that you are not drilling into a gas tank or other important object under the cab!
8. Place the carpeting back over and cut out a hole just large enough to expose the mounting bracket. (Photo #2)
9. Now you are done with the console except for sliding it in place.
Seats
1. You may need to do some pre-work. My seats came out of a ’99 Explorer Sport so they tilt forward. The seat tracks on the Explorer seats fit exactly to my Ranger mounting holes. However the seat belts were different. The female seat belt ends from the Explorer seats would not latch with my Ranger male ends so I removed the female seat belt ends from my 60/40 Ranger seats and mounted them on the Explorer seat belt tracks (the Explorer female seat belt ends mount on a track that fastens to the inside track of the seat but also to the truck floorboard.) (Photo #3)
2. For wiring, I ran a power wire (I used #12 wire) from the cigarette lighter to the drivers seat. This will enable the seats to be adjusted with the ignition switch off. The cigarette lighter is already fused to a 30 amp fuse which is what Explorer uses for power seats.) I ran a ground wire (#12) from the grounding bolt located behind the left kick panel. These wires ran across the floor and into the wiring loom on the driver’s side of the cab. (Photo #4)
3. Replace the carpeting. You will want to run a length of power wire and ground wire under the carpeting from the passenger side to the drivers side if your passenger seat requires, power as mine does, before replacing the carpet.
4. I now installed the console since I thought it would be easier than trying to do it with the seats in place. Since my passenger seat has power lumbar, I spliced a power wire and ground wire into the power connector of the passenger seat with crimp connector. Had I had an extra Ford two wire quick connector I would have used that to make seat removal easier.
5. I mounted the passenger seat to the floor of the cab with the original Ranger mounting bolts. I had to drill out the seat track mounting hole just slightly on the inside mount as the Ranger bolts were slightly larger. The passenger seat power wires were snaked under the carpeting to the driver’s side where they will connect to the driver’s side power line.
6. I then connected the main power and ground from the truck and the power and ground from the passenger seat to a two wire quick connector.
7. Then I bolted the driver’s seat in place using the original ranger bolts. Again had to drill out one mounting hole in the seat track mounting foot and connected the power quick connector to the driver’s seat power.
8. I connected the seat belt warning connector to the original connector used in the Ranger 60/40 seats. (Photo #5)
9. The seat belt mounting was a bit more involved. I made a mount from a piece of 3/16 x 1 ½ inch angle iron for each side. I used ½ inch stainless bolts and locking nuts to mount the Explorer seat belt bracket to the angle iron. I then drilled a hole in the other side of the angle iron to accommodate the bolts from the middle seat belts from the 60/40 seats. This I bolted in its original hole to the floor pan. (Photo #6)
10. Photo #7 shows the completed set-up with seats and console.
