On my '97 Explorer 4.0, when it is in park or in drive. I can hear a click sound from under the hood then the rpms drop to near 500. Seems like it is going to stall then, it will click again and rpms increase. to date this only happens occasionally, but it is becoming more frequent. Also seems to be temperature sensitive.
any Ideas?
The clicking should be your A/C compressor engaging, hence the drop in RPM. The low RPM reading is probably caused by a bad IAC or a loose vacuum hose. This happened this past summer. I've experienced that when the engine speed is low, I mean low...around 400-600rpm due to the bad IAC, then the A/C compressor would engage every 2 or 3 seconds.
Billy, I think you may have hit the nail on the head. The click noise sounds like the AC compressor alright, but temperture here in Ohio now is way below freezin. Would the AC compressor be making the noise at this time of year? Sorry, when it comes to these "New" fangled contraptions I am kinda ignorant. Also what is IAC?
Your A/C compressor will cycle in every position other than in Vent position so your compressor will cycle all the time. Here's a thread where I've put a few links about the IAC.
Duh!!! I never thought about the defroster. But come to think of it now, when the outdoor temp was 70degrees the 4.0L was even doing this flucutation and clicking when AC and Defrost was off. I live way out in the country just don't want to get stranded in this weather. lol
I had a clicking A/C compressor and the reason for the audible clicking sound was that the R134 was a bit low and there was not enough oil for the clutch. just a thought but I do agree with the above the compressor will put the engine under load.
