Clicking and "bubbling" noise from under the hood

I have a 97 explorer with the 4.0 sohc and its starting to make some funny noises. There is a clicking noise that changes the idle. I know there is supposed to be a high and low idle but the now it jumps back and forth even when the engine is fully warmed up. Also, when I accelerate there is a "bubbling" noise that stops when I hear the engine click. There are no trouble codes and I couldn't see anything obvious when I looked under the hood. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave85zxt

I have the same symptoms coming from the engine compartment of my 4.0L SOHC V6 and I suspect it is related to the Air Conditioning Compressor. I think the clicking is the compressor cutting in and out... in fact I just read in an earlier post the refrigerant may need topping up.

When you have the controls set for defrost of bi-level, then the A/C compressor is turned on to remove moisture and aid in the de-fogging process. This should account for the clicking that you hear. Does the noise occure all the time, even with the selector set to off? If that is the case, then I'm not sure what could be causing the noise you hear. As for the bubbling noise you hear.... it could either be that the A/C system needs to be checked and refrigerant added if necessary. The other thing that sould be causing this is air trapped in the cooling system. If you are low on anitfreeze, then you will periodically hear what soulds like bubbling or russing water from inside the cabin. Hope that helps and let us know how you make out.
