I did it on mine... but I only recomend it on auto hub trucks, because tight turns are hell on the front end (not to mention the guy holding the steering wheel) I always back up and unlock the hubs before making a tight turn. If I need 4wd to make the turn, they there's enough slippage to keep from exploding the front end

Sounds scary to me. I think I'd save my pennies and invest in an airlocker. Oops, I am saving my pennies for an airlocker, or two.
The good part is you only need around 90,000 pennies, plus tax. Each.

i completely and totally disagree with 93_150....manual hubs are the way to go....that way you can keep one hub locked and retain a lil bit of turning radius and when it gets hairy lock the other side in.

I have some pics of a 10.25" welded rear if ya want them, they aren't much different! I am about to do it to my D60 front. Talk to 85351Ho.....his is done this way!

strong....cheap....reliable (if done right)

A box of welding rods only costs $50!

It's called a "lincoln locker". And doing that, you could risk destroying your carrier, ring gear, and or housing.

i agree...but if you do it right it will serve many many years. It's the ppl who tack weld the spider gears to the carrier that i am really concerned about!

Yeah, I hear ya. Turning is going to suck, but it should crawl straight threw anything. I heard of welding the spiders to the case and I have heard of complete disassembly and welding in the valleys of the spider gear to bind them up. I have also heard of guys pouring lead into there carriers to stop the spiders from working. I gues my question realy is what is the best way to weld my spiders?

weld the spiders together by filling in the teeth. then weld the spiders to the carrier. Make sure you DO NOT get any slag in the axle splines....put cloth or something in there.

You could save yourself some hassles and maybe even some money if you put a mini-spool in there. It does the same thing but it's reversible. There's also less of a chance of it coming loose.

I haven't checked on availability or price for the dana 44, but the one I have in my 9" was $28 on ebay (including shipping).

Just a thought.
