Considering how many guys do a poor job on welding their gears which results in breakage, and how many end up not liking it fully locked 100% time, and how cheap mini-spools are...I generally recomend spools (or mini in this case). I'm betting this guy is thinking about doing it on something that isn't a dedicated trail/mud truck and he'll be in for a surprise the first time he takes a corner on the road in 4x4 in the ice...so it will be nice to have it reversible. Lincoln lockers in the front are for those who are expert welders and don't lock in their front on the roads.
spool, mini spool....it there a big difference, i know what a spool is, takes te he place of the gears, whats a mini spool take place of???....i wanna spool my front, D44 in the TTB F150. im running 35s, is that too much for the D44. i dont drive in 4wd on the road, the most i will do is put it in 4lo for the gears, just not lock in the hubs in the raod.
The only reason I recomended auto hubs is so you don't have to get out and unlock them to turn. I welded the spider gears together and left the carrier alone, so I could go back to open without spending a whole lot of cash (under 50 bucks for new spider gears) Theres an Auburn electric in my solid axle D44, as soon as I can afford the downtime to slide it under the truck I'll tell y'all about it
Mini spools and spools require me to disassemble my front axle. This looks to be alot of work. Welding I can have done, and all I need is 90w to fill her back up when I'm done

no you have to pull it out to weld it....well you don't have to but you would be on the safer side if you did!
a spool replaces your carrier...bolt the ring gear on it and then put it back together. Minispool just replaces the spider gears (same thing a lincoln locker does) inside the carrier! Full spools are stronger but you get what you pay for!
I found this site, and they have spools and mini spools for Dana 44's. The prices start at $130 and $33 respectfully. Either of these routes would be stronger than welding the spiders.
mini spools are weaker than a full spool because your still using your stock carrier and the cross pin takes all the power, some thing when you just weld the spider gears together....but when you weld the spiders together, then weld them to the carrier(no turning back) not all of the load is placed on the cross pin, a full spool is much stronger than any of the above
one day when my poor college budget can afford a selectable for the front, thats what im doing, but for now the price of my front locker suits me just fine
its been in there for over a year, after the first run, i took it back out, rewelded it, cleaned off the remaining slag with a chisel and then my pressure washer, and i keep a pretty good eye on it, its been holding up great for me
ok, straight out, can a D44, TTB set up handle mini spooling if i just keep it locked when im off road, i got the 35s, so straight out, shoudl i chance it, i cant afford to really rebuild for a few years, but i need something up there, open blows...
