Very confused with my 96 PSD. My wait to start light is not coming on when I first start it in the cold morning (with it plugged in) or when I start it after work after it has been sitting for 10 hrs in the cold. It's been about 15 degrees this week. However, when I get home from work (about 35 miles) and shut the engine off, then turn the key back on, the wait to start light will SOMETIMES come on for about 1 second. Any ideas why the light is not coming on all the time? FYI, I noticed the light not working soon after I changed oil (switched from Rotella T 15W-40 to Rotella T synthetic 5W-40) Would this have any effect on the wait to start light? It used to work just fine, when it was cold it would stay on for around 15 - 20 seconds. Any help I would greatly appreciate.
Might be that relay on top of the motor, possible it is about ready to go and the engine heat loosens things up in there, they are only about 20 dollars anyhow.
Most autoparts stores have them, usually i change it when i change my glowplugs. Basiclly a starter celonoid, atleast thats what it looks like. It is above the intake manifold, atleast on my 2000 it is.
I've had 2 glow plug relays crap out, and never had a problem with the WTS light not working. Think I'd keep searching. If it's starting at 15 degrees after 10 hours, your glow plugs are obviously working, hence, the GPR is working, too.
It is always good to wait for the light. But in my oppion if it is warm then no need to wait. I wait every time I start though. Even in my 2003 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor "its a gasser" I wait....My partner looks at me funny and I just tell him he jelous because he does not own a FORD with the 7.3 HE HE his loss not mine.... Disregard this post it was meant for another ........sorry.

Last Saturday I changed the GPR and when I checked it after installing, the wait to start light came on like normal before starting. I was hoping I fixed the problem. Sunday morning it was -1, I turned the key and NO wait to start light came on. After getting to church, I shut the truck off, then turned the key back on and the wait to start light came on for about 2 sec, like normal. After church, it warmed up to about 15 degrees, but the light didnt come on when I started up. It seems to start ok if I wait for 20 sec, just a lot of smoke for about 5 or 10 minutes until the truck warms up. Anyone have a similar problem? It makes no sense to me, but the week before I changed the GPL, it warmed up to around 25 degrees and it seems like the wait to start light works fine, as soon as the temp drops to 15 or under, the light does not come on. Maybe an electrical wiring problem? any ideas where to check? Thanks for all your help so far.
