I have a 1999 f350 Super Duty diesel that I recently purchased and it is possessed. I researched this site and people have had similar questions but I have not heard this one:
While driving, my door ajar light stays on half the time and then comes on the other half. Additionally, my overhead interior lights do the same. HOWEVER, just prior to coming back on, I hear a loud "click" coming from the center of the dash. I do not know if this is related or not (I think so ).
I have heard about the door swithces, etc. but this does not explain the overhead light situation.
Also, my lights stay on for about 10 minutes after I leave the truck and lock the doors. This seems a little too long... and yes I have checked the dimmer switch.
Has grease been used to lube the door lock mech.? Its the part that locks to the door jam striker bolt. If so, i would clean real well, then spray the door lock part that locks to the bolt real well, lube with a light spray lube when done.
Door ajar and dome lights are both related to the door switch problem. Clicking from the dash is a timer that shuts down any lighting left on after about 10 min or something. When door ajar situation exists and the dome lights are on while you are driving, the dome light will go off after about 10 min due to the timer, then the truck says "Hey, My ignition is on"(Yes I have personally heard it) and turns the dome lights etc back on, only to shut off again in 10 mins. Yes I had this problem too, the fix was the WD40 in the latches that I learned from here. Hope this helps explain the issue.
Also, the 10 min timer is also why your lights stay on after you have locked the truck. It thinks the door is open and leaves the dome light on, then shuts it off after 10 mins so you don't kill your battery.
Ok, seems to be the latch. Now, please don't rag on me for this one. On most vehicles, the door ajar and dome lights are controlled by a switch (pin or nipple) that extrudes from the body of the truck, in the door frame, and when the door is closed, the pin or nipple is depressed, thus shutting of the lights. I can't find one of these on my truck. Is it safe to say that this is an internal mechanism within the door's latch and all I need to do is hose it down with WD-40?
