Cool 429 heads

Hi all I am new to the forum, and was wondering if anyone might be able to help me. I bought a 1966 Ford pickup last year that has a 70 model 429 in it. I have adjusted the valves several times and I always adjust each cylinders intake and exhaust valve on the closed position. To adjust I get the slack out of the rocker arm and then leave it alone. It seems to work runs great ET 8.85, but a buddy that know quite more than I do says I need to adjust til the slack is out then I need to turn the nut an additional 3/4 a turn, but I am afraid that will be to tight. Anyone know the real way? Would appreciate the help.

Thanks Traderray

If you have standard hyd. lifters, tighten until all slack is out and 1/2 turn more. For anti pump-up hyd. lifters, tighten to zero lash, and no further. For solid lifters, find the spec sheet on the cam and set lash at closed position. Hope this helps.

If they are hydraulic lifters, they are zero lash rocker arms. They are supposed to be tightened up all the way. Any adjustment is to be done by installing different length pushrods.

We Need to know if they are hyd lifters or mechanical. If they are hyd lifters and stud mount then 1/2 to 3/4 turn past zero lash is about right. If they are pedastel mount you just tighten until the pedastel bottoms out and then torque the bolt to spec and any adjustment is done with push rods or shims under the pedastel. Eric

Actually some of the hydraulic lifter motors still came with adjustable rockers, so that is not always valid. You can always set regular hydraulic rockers right as the lash is taken up. Heck, you can even leave them loose. They won't pump-up then!! It really won't hurt anything but it will be noisy.
