Tips on Diablo Chip Installation
I took a few pics while upgrading my Diablo Delta. Please take a few moments to look at them. Feel free to comment or add helpful info. Tell me if this is useful.
Ken, I FINALLY got enough time off to get this switch installed. It went like clockwork this time.
I reset the the ECU by leaving the battery unplugged during the installation, and firing it back up in the premium program (91 octane). I ran two tanks thru to keep from diluting the premium fuel with regular.
Noted are soft 1st-to-2nd gear upshifts even on strong accelerations. The others are nice, even on light accleration. Think I'll go for a valve body modification from Transgo or someone.
Power increase? Hard to tell in a truck of this weight. I do notice easier downshifting and a lot less pedal to keep it at speeds, so my guess is it's working just fine. It's hard to tell if the new engine is loosening up or if the chip is really doing its thing. My guess is it's both.
The test wil come on my next trailer outing! In any event, it's a keeper. When I run it out of premium, I'll switch it back to regular and see the differences.
The advertising claims an increase of "up to" 15 hp and 45(?) lbs torque. I don't know why the "up to" was included. I hope the program you put in it will give me that much considering it's a bone-stock engine. Maybe they meant with K&N, and tuned exhaust.
But, that brings up the question, can one of these Diablo's be added to a 1997 Van with the V-10? I'm not sure where the ECU is located. It was reflashed in 1999 for some compliance with emissions?
Did you see the pics?

I'll have to wait until the fuel mix is reverted back to summer blend to see if the fuel economy goes up on the 91 octane tune. As of now it's no better nor worse. That would seem to indicate to me it is indeed running leaner in the premium tune since typically my fuel economy goes down on winter blends due to the oxygenation additives.
I can't wait to tow that trailer and see how it will work. Too bad fuel prices are going back up again, or I'd never switch back to regular!
I have noticed on the freeway throttle response is superb, and a lighter throttle is need to maintain speeds on grades than before.
This electronic age is amazing. Before I had to have my engines dyno'ed to the tune of 300 bucks to acheive the same affect. And I am talking 300 bucks in the late 1980's!!
What other things can I do to wring out a few more pounds of torque short of spending a few thousand on a Whipple?
